How we waste money on low quality products!
Picture this; it’s just another day. You go to your supermarket to buy your regular grocery and household items. You are welcomed by an unexciting store setup, meaning there are no flashy red and yellow tags that shout “BUY 1 GET 2 FREE” or “50% FLAT OFF TODAY”. There is not even one fancy decoration, no seizure-inducing 16 million colors, blinking-LED lighting. There is no architectural pile of products stacked on top of each another to look like a pyramid or the leaning tower of Pisa!
What do you do? You would instead follow your list of essential items, make the purchase and leave. Right? On the other hand, if it was a sale day? You would most likely walk out of the supermarket with more items in your cart! The BUY 1 GET 2 offer was irresistible!
It seems evident that we are a quantity-obsessed nation! Many of us cease to think for a bit, why is something so cheap? Why Buy 1 Get 1? Is it that cheap? What’s the catch? Well, we are ignorant and helpless because we want MORE for LESS!
Branded Supermarkets
I am not a fan of the big brand supermarkets when buying fruits and vegetables. During a sale, the fruits and vegetables at these supermarkets cost half of that sold by the local vendors. No wonder papaya doesn’t taste sweet and has lumps in them! The same is the case with bananas. They don’t have any flavor. They don’t have sweetness and sometimes are hard and lumpy! Again, those oranges are mostly sour! I then ask myself, how are these fruits made?
The problem with low quality
More and more people are falling for the BUY 1 GET 1 trap; Firstly, it’s very tempting because two for the price of one sure seems like a great deal. Little does one realize you just bought two-many low-quality stuff that won’t last or will they perform any good compared to a good quality product. Second, this translates to unnecessary repeat spending and more waste generation when your cheap and best product gives up sooner than it should! Poor-quality products, the more we keep buying, the more their value depreciates over time! There will come a day when quality items will be put in a museum and people will be queuing up to take a selfie!
Conclusion
A toddler with two cookies in his hand will be reluctant to share because his food security is at jeopardy! what if he has ten? given that he can hold to only two cookies, he is likely to share the rest. Same is the case with too much stock, we tend to use ‘1’ carelessly because we have the other ‘1’ on standby just in case. Buy 1 Get 1 is really not good! Given the current situation; pandemic aftermath, declining jobs, layoffs, soaring inflation, it would be prudent to spend rationally.
